Floating Drawings 공중(입체)드로잉 (2017~)

The “Floating Drawing” series is a project that creates suspended cubic drawings in mid-air using thread, fabric, and paint. Countless stitches anchor thin wires to a canvas panel, which are then extended downward like warp threads. Layer by layer, horizontal threads are woven across them to form geometric volumes with dimensional depth.

The subjects of these works are anonymous landscapes and ordinary people—quiet presences that often go unnoticed. Their forms are rendered large or delicately refined, shaped by a warm, attentive gaze. The resulting installations sway gently in response to even the faintest breeze, like ripples in still water. These subtle movements condense and expand the emotional impressions held within each drawn figure, combining the linear character of drawing with spatial motion.

‘공중 드로잉(입체 드로잉)’ 시리즈는 실과 섬유, 물감을 활용하여 공중에 부유하는 입체적 입방형 드로잉을 구현하는 프로젝트이다. 수많은 바느질로 캔버스 패널에 고정된 와이어를 지면으로 늘어뜨리고, 이를 날줄 삼아 땅의 방향으로 씨줄을 얹어가며, 점차 부피감을 갖춘 기하학적 구조를 형성한다. 작업의 모티브는 이름 모를 풍경과 평범한 사람들이다. 크거나 섬세하게 다듬어진 그들의 형상은, 평소 주목받지 못하던 존재들에게 따뜻한 시선을 보내며 성의껏 묘사된다. 미세한 풍압에도 잔물결처럼 일렁이는 이 설치 구조물은 드로잉의 선적인 특성과 함께 움직이며, 형상의 모티브가 된 이들의 인상을 응축하고 또 확장시킨다.

Low Mound, Burned Water 낮아진 언덕, 검은 물 (2024)

《Low Mound, Burned Water》 is a three-dimensional drawing that abstracts human form and posture through the medium of thread and fiber. Through the physical changes of her aging mother and the language exchanged in everyday moments, the artist visualizes the long journey of a woman—both as an individual and as a mother. The mother, who has stood as a shelter and a gentle hill for her child, carries within her body the history of unspoken tears—tears suppressed and burned deep into her chest by the weight of time and family narratives. Particularly striking is the way the artist captures a distinct form of emotional restraint prevalent in Korean and broader East Asian cultures: the tendency to hide true feelings and express them in reverse. This cultural nuance is discreetly inscribed along the underside of the installation’s upper panel, where faint traces of scratched-away white paint reveal fragments of actual conversations between the artist and her mother—private confessions and vulnerable truths that most people find difficult to voice aloud.

By tenaciously portraying people and places within breath’s reach, the artist paradoxically unveils a more universal landscape—one layered with shared memories and collective experience. Through the act of weaving the intimate emotional states of women and elderly figures—especially those of grandmothers—into her work, the artist brings to light the shadows of hardship endured by generations relegated to the margins of social attention. Hundreds of strands of nylon fiber and thread drift aimlessly at first, entangling and knotting themselves, only to gradually condense into a refined structural form. Each small knot trembles with delicate motion, like ordinary hands gently holding one another. Together, they create an organic, flowing continuum—binding the space, and metaphorically, the wider world, into a single, unbroken line.

《낮아진 언덕, 검은 물》은 실과 섬유를 매개로 인물의 형상과 태도를 추상화한 ‘입체 드로잉’이다. 작가는 나이가 들어가는 어머니의 신체적 변화와 일상 속 언어를 통해, 한 여성으로서, 그리고 어머니로서 살아온 이의 긴 여정을 시각적으로 풀어낸다. 아이에게 쉼터이자 작은 언덕처럼 존재해 온 어머니의 역할과, 시대와 가족사를 견디며 끝내 흘려보내지 못했던 눈물들은 가슴 깊은 곳에서 검게 타들어간 흔적으로 형상화된다.

특히, 한국을 비롯한 동아시아 문화권에서 흔히 나타나는 '본심을 숨기고 반어적으로 표현하는 화법'은 설치 작업의 상부 패널 하단에 은밀하게 기록되어 있다. 관람자가 자세히 들여다보면 작가와 어머니 사이의 실제 대화, 그리고 세상 누구나 쉽게 꺼내지 못하는 진심의 조각들이 흰 물감을 긁어낸 흔적으로 새겨져 있음을 발견할 수 있다. 작가는 삶에서 ‘숨결이 닿을 만큼 가까운 인물과 장소’를 집요하게 묘사함으로써 오히려 더 보편적인 세계와 집단적 기억의 층위를 드러낸다. 오랫동안 사회적 관심의 외곽에 머물렀던 여성과 노년의 존재들, 특히 할머니 세대의 내밀한 감정을 직조함으로써, 그들이 살아낸 고단한 시절과 시대의 그림자가 작품 속에서 서서히 모습을 드러낸다. 수백 가닥의 나일론 섬유와 실들은 정처 없이 서로 엉키고 매듭지며, 점차 정제된 조형 구조로 응축된다. 작은 매듭 하나하나는 마치 서로의 손을 맞잡은 평범한 사람들처럼 미세하게 흔들리며, 공간 속에서 마치 온 세상을 한 줄기 선으로 이어내듯 유기적인 흐름을 만들어낸다.

R: 알 (2023)

<R: 알> is a three-dimensional drawing that illustrates the journey of life, starting as a tiny embryonic cell growing inside the mother’s body, and gradually gaining independence by moving away from the mother’s care after birth. The piece reflects the artist’s son’s experience when, around age five, he first expressed the desire for his own room. Using overlapping lines arranged in a sequence, it delicately captures how he slowly established his own identity by creating distance from his parents.

<R: 알>은 작은 배아세포에서 시작된 생명이 엄마의 몸 안에서 점차 자신의 몸을 키워 나가고, 태어난 후에는 조금씩 모체를 떠나 독립된 공간을 확보하는 과정을 입체 드로잉으로 표현한 작품이다. 작가의 아들이 5세 무렵 처음으로 방을 갖고 싶다는 의사를 보였으며, 이후 부모와의 거리를 서서히 넓혀가면서 혼자만의 정체성을 찾아가는 과정을 섬세하게 겹쳐진 선들의 시퀀스로 담아냈다.

Skirt Waves 치마파도 (2023)

<Skirt Waves> is a heartfelt tribute to the women who have shaped a man’s life—from his wife to his grandmother—reflecting the bonds formed since childhood. The work distills the emotions and symbolism these women represent. Using motifs such as the sea, waves, empathy, gray hair, lullabies, and skirts, it evokes the universal warmth of mothers and women, expressing a longing to return to that source amid the intensity of life. This sentiment is subtly conveyed through imagery where colors gradually fade away.

<치마파도>는 아내에서 할머니에 이르기까지 한 남자가 유년기부터 맺어온 여성들과의 인연에 대한 감사함을 담은 작품이다. 이 작품은 그 여성들이 형성한 정서와 디자인을 함축적으로 표현한다. 바다와 물결, 이해심, 흰머리, 자장가, 치마 등, 인류 보편의 어머니와 여성에 대한 따스함과 삶의 격정 속에서 그 근원으로 돌아가고자 하는 마음을, 색이 점차 사라지는 도상을 통해 자연스럽게 형상화하였다.

Who is Afraid of Hot Pink, Fluorescent Yellow, and Blue? 누가 핫핑크, 형광노랑, 그리고 파랑을 두려워하는가? (2023)

Who’s Afraid of Hot Pink, Neon Yellow, and Blue?” pays tribute to Barnett Newman’s iconic Who’s Afraid of Red, Yellow, and Blue? Created during the artist’s stay in Los Angeles, this work delves into the relationship between material security and the spiritual balance within individuals and society. Using vibrant patterned lace and fabrics sourced from a large shopping mall, the artist repeatedly deconstructs and reorients these materials to craft a soaring vertical composition. Through countless hours of meticulous handwork, drawing-inspired elements take on three-dimensional form, resulting in a delicate, floating structure of lines suspended in space.

<누가 핫핑크, 형광노랑, 그리고 파랑을 두려워하는가?>는 바넷 뉴먼의 <누가 빨강, 노랑, 파랑을 두려워하는가?>에 대한 오마주 작품이다. 작가는 미국 로스앤젤레스에 머무르던 시기에, 물질적 안정성이 개인과 사회의 영적 여유 및 상호작용과 어떻게 교차하는지를 탐구하고 이를 작품에 담았다. 대형 쇼핑몰에서 구입한 화려한 패턴의 레이스와 섬유를 해체하고 기울이는 반복적 과정을 통해 하늘로 솟구치는 수직적 구성을 구축하였다. 무수히 반복되는 수공예적 작업은 드로잉적 언어를 기반으로 부피를 형성하며, 공중에 떠 있는 듯한 입체적 선의 구조를 완성한다.

Broken Water 깨진물 (2022)

<Broken Water> is a three-dimensional drawing centered around a hemispherical form that evokes the rounded belly of a full-term pregnant woman. From beneath this shape flows a spiral ‘skirt’ that cascades like a waterfall. Standing 3.3 meters tall, the monumental structure is covered in wave-like patterns, its organic form gently swaying with the slightest breeze—capturing the life force shared by both the human body and water. At the base, over 300 tiny miniatures, each smaller than a fingernail, are carefully arranged to represent the tools essential for the birth of the human body, delicately nurtured like seeds. These small figures rest among droplets falling from above, telling a narrative of the inseparable bond between water and life, inviting the viewer to deep reflection.

<깨진물>은 만삭의 임부 배를 닮은 반구형 조형물 아래로, 폭포수처럼 흘러내리는 나선형 치맛자락이 연결된 입체 드로잉이다. 높이 3.3미터에 이르는 이 거대한 구조는 파도 무늬로 가득 찬 유기적 형태가 미세한 바람에도 흔들리며, 마치 인간의 육체와 물이 지닌 생명력을 동시에 품고 있다. 작품 하단부에는 손톱보다 작은 300여 점의 미니어처가 정교하게 배치되어, 인간의 육신이 탄생하는 데 필요한 도구들이 씨앗처럼 작고 소중하게 잉태된 모습을 연출한다. 이 작은 형상들은 위에서 떨어지는 물방울 사이사이에 자리 잡아 ‘물과 생명’의 불가분한 연관성을 서사적으로 드러내며, 관람자에게 깊은 사유를 이끈다.
